EXCERPT: Saturday flew by, like it always did. Callan stepped outside the main building of the Newport Heights apartment complex. His right running shoe flexed more than it should have. He glanced down and grumbled at the trailing laces. Dammit. He knelt and tied his shoe.
The click-clack of high heels. A high-pitched giggle. Long, sculpted feminine legs came to a
halt beside him. They look even better in heels. He blew out a breath and rose to his feet.
“Oh. And it’s you. Maybe just ‘U’ for Umbrella Guy with no name.”
“You’re not resourceful. Or you’re not trying.”
“I’m not trying because I really don’t care. If you want to be a normal human, you’ll
introduce yourself. If not, the mystery shall remain unsolved. I’m fine either way.”
He swallowed the urge to grin. “Maybe I can’t tell you who I am.”
“Ha ha. Yeah, OK. One of those ‘I can’t tell you or I’d have to kill you’ things.” Her eyes
narrowed under so much makeup. “So mysterious. So cool. Whatever.” She tossed her hair and looked away. He took the opportunity to appreciate the view. Ms. Priss the neighbor wore a low-cut minidress that hugged every tight, sensual curve of her body—and showed off those legs to full advantage.
He had to admit, he was starting to enjoy this. She was emotional, expressive. A little too
easy to rile up. But that was what made these small interactions fun. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and glanced around. Minidress, high heels. “Date tonight?”
“Meeting friends.” She looked at him, arms crossed, shoulders turned away. Prissy Neighbor peeked over her shoulder. “You?”
He grinned. “Can’t tell you that either.”
“You’re such an ass. Go away already and let me wait for my rideshare in peace.”
He shrugged but stayed put. A minute or two crawled past. Cool April air swept through the
silence. The sound of traffic in the distance.
“I’d ask if you were waiting for a ride, too, but I figure you won’t tell me.”
“I’ll walk.”
“Over a mile?”
“You don’t know where I’m going.”
“I’m assuming the retail center with all the restaurants. But your secret spy base of
operations could be closer than that, I guess,” she said with a scowl and a huff.
He couldn’t help it: he chuckled. A light bubbling danced in his chest. It brought a warmth,
and the memory of her skin beneath his fingertips, the sweet smell of her hair. A strange urge to pull her close, to touch her hand, again, settled into the warmness of the moment.
Tires screeched as a white SUV turned off the main drive. The engine revved, accelerating
through the parking lot. He moved to the edge of the curb—between the oncoming vehicle and his neighbor.
J. Rose Black weaves stories about obsession, redemption, and the transcendental power of love. From her early days writing fanfiction for a passionate following of international readers, to crafting novels with her own characters, Rose has always been drawn to broody protectors and plucky, no-nonsense women ready to fight for what they believe in.
When Rose isn’t deeply immersed in her latest manuscript, she’s working in cyber security and thwarting the next generation of internet bad guys. Out of the office, she’s #Shipping with friends over her favorite, swoon-worthy couples, heading to the gym to battle the great evil that is Unmovable Baby Weight, or complaining about her husband’s addiction to 3D printing. Also: nagging her children to eat something other than cheese.
