Hesi-Dating by Zoe Forward
Genres: Adult, Comedy,
I warn all my dates: Don’t fall for me.
I’m good for a date or two of no-strings fun, but then I’m a ghost.
Until the sheriff. He saves me from a jerky ex-date. Now I owe him a favor. Almost a decade older than me, funny, and insanely attractive, my chemistry with Seth is off the charts. His post-divorce hurt makes me want to heal his wounded soul. For the first time in ever, I say no. He doesn’t deserve my heartbreaking ways. I tell myself I must walk away since me dating law enforcement is a no-can-do. I’m not a felon, but I do have connections from my past that make it dangerous. If I’m truthful, it’s self-preservation. Seth threatens to awaken the desiccated organ inside my chest.
Then he needs a favor.
Calling in favors becomes our not-dating game.
I should have stopped helping him. I should have left well enough alone. But I just couldn’t resist. I have a connection to this guy. One that has me acting irrationally. One that snags the attention of the gang leader I wished would leave me alone.
I want to nurture our burgeoning spark, but I must protect us from the deadly dangers of my past.
Hesi-dating features a hesitant sheriff, a player girl hiding a big heart and dangerous past, a lame horse, and the world’s worst home security dog. It stands alone and comes complete with sibling meddling, an awkward naked handcuffs scene, and a sweetly satisfying happily ever after.
Not
what I'd intended saying.
"What's
wrong? Is Henry okay?"
"He's
fine, I think." I leaned over the bed to peek at him. "I, um…" I
banged my head against the headboard again.
"What's
wrong, Seth?"
"I've
got myself stuck in a tight spot."
"More
than your wedding date dumping you?"
"Way
more." I dropped my chin. "I'm trapped in a hookup gone wrong."
"Are
you wanting me to phone and rescue you? Or do you need me to show up and get
you out of the date?"
"I'm
stuck…locked in, and she left me this way."
"Should
I call 9-1-1?" She paused but then added, "You have your phone so you
could call. That means you don't want to. Are you worried a friend of yours
might show up?"
"I'm
in Del Mar, which is our jurisdiction. High chance I'll know whoever gets
called out. This sucks. I'm at Hotel Blue. I didn’t want to be her but she
twisted my arm with political leverage." I lowered my voice to a whisper,
hoping she'd miss some of the details. "I'm handcuffed naked to a bed and
can't get free."
I
expected laughter.
What
I got was silence.
"Oh…wow.
I'm sorry. You jumped into the deep end of hookups, didn't you?" Muffled
noise from the other end that I couldn't make out as either laughter or
movement. "Are you asking me to drive to Del Mar to free you?"
"This
is…" I banged my head against the headboard again. "Can you think of
anything to avoid that?"
"I
assume the cuff keys are—"
"Out
of reach," I interrupted.
"Can
you ask the front desk to come up? No, that would be weird. Do you think the
keys are still in the room or did she take them?"
"I'm
pretty sure they're still here. I don't know how to get to them. I can't reach.
Can't break the headboard. I really don't want to break my hand."
"The
only way you're getting free is if someone helps you. I'm getting in my car.
Should take me about 20 minutes to get there. I'll call when I arrive."
"I
have to warn you, my dog puked before we… It's why she took off."
Silence.
"You
still the Joley?"
She
asked softly, "Did she hurt you or Henry? Are you both okay?"
"The
puke was my fault. I gave Henry a donut, which didn't mix well with his
elevator ride.”
"You
hang on. I'm heading your way. Hotel Blue, right? What room are you in?"
"I
don't know."
"You
got yourself cuffed to a bed, your dog puked on your hookup, and you don't know
the room number. You don't do anything half-ass, do you?"
