The Family You Make by Jill Shalvis

Paperback, 356 pages

Published January 11th 2022 by William Morrow & Company

Genre:  Contemporary Romance, Chick Lit

From Goodreads:  Beloved New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis begins a new series--Sunrise Cove--set near beautiful Lake Tahoe, with a heartwarming story of found family and love.

During the snowstorm of the century Levi Cutler is stranded on a ski lift with a beautiful stranger named Jane. After strong winds hurl the gondola in front of them into the ground, Levi calls his parents to prepare them for the worst...but can't bring himself to say goodbye. Instead, wanting to fulfill his mother's lifelong wish, he impulsively tells her he's happily settled and Jane is his girlfriend--right before his phone dies.

But Levi and Jane do not.

Now Levi's family is desperate to meet "The One." Though Jane agrees to be his pretend girlfriend for just one dinner, she's nervous. After a traumatic childhood, Jane isn't sure she knows how to be around a tight-knit family that cherishes one another. She's terrified, and a little jealous. But an unexpected series of events and a host of new friends soon show Jane that perhaps this is the life she was always meant to have.

As Jane and Levi spend more time together, pretend feelings quickly turn into real ones. Now all Jane has to do is admit to herself she can't live without the man she's fallen in love with and the family she has always dreamed of.

My Thoughts:  A new series by one of my go-to authors.  I am in heaven!  Jill Shalvis is an author I turn to when I am looking for a comfort read.   Her books have lovable characters, the settings are quaint, and the stories are guaranteed to pull me in leaving me wanting more.

The characters of Levi and Jane are wonderful.   They are not perfect in their lives but they are perfect for each other.  The idea of being a pretend girlfriend was fun for me to read about but not so fun for Jane to do.  Very quickly her feelings for Levi become more then pretend and she must be careful not to give in to the urge to stop pretending and let her feelings show.   Luckily, Levi has the same problem and his feelings are real also.   I enjoyed watching the circle around each other, wondering if the other person was just pretending also.

The family dynamics were interesting.   I LOVE Levi’s family.   They are nosy, in your business with your best interests at heart family.   They are full of love and are not afraid to show it.  The opposite can be said for Jane.   Her family has deserted her when she needed them most, as a child, and she does not realize how much she wants what Levi has.  I love that her friends have become her family, pushing her to put down roots while also realizing that she must make her own choices to find her happiness.

I am looking forward to more from the Sunrise Cove series and cannot wait to see what else this small town with amazing residents has to offer.    I recommend read The Family You Make.
